Lower and Upper Nocera
Nuceria Alfaterna is an ancient city with a thousand-year history. Considered one of the largest cities of ancient Campania, it was the capital of the Nucerina League which included the cities of Pompeii, Herculaneum, Stabiae and Sorrento and saw the Etruscans, Samnites and Romans pass through its streets.
Today the ancient city is located in the territory of the current municipalities of Nocera Superiore and Nocera Inferiore. Of the ancient Nuceria, some monuments are preserved, among which the most important is the Early Christian Baptistery of Santa Maria Maggiore, but not only. Of particular relevance are also the Hellenistic Roman Theater from the 2nd century BC, the Amphitheater from the 1st century BC, the Necropolis of Pizzone and other remains of thermal buildings and sepulchral areas.
